When I was in college taking writing classes for my public relations degree, I had a professor who enforced one very important rule when it came to writing press releases.
“You can get the date wrong. You can get the time wrong. You can even get the location wrong. But you must always, ALWAYS get the name right.”
Everyone wants to see their names in print – whether it’s online, on paper or on a marquee. It’s proof that we exist. We even make it a point to etch our names in stone when we die so that others will know that we were born, we lived and when we passed, we were important to someone.
To have your name misspelled can be hugely disappointing. It’s like being told you’re not worthy of the extra time it takes to double-check it. To misspell someone’s name or to get it wrong is also like denying their very existence.
This is why you should always ask your client or customer to spell their name, no matter how simple it might seem – even if it’s just to write their name on a coffee cup.
Until next time, may the Force be with you…
